Road Maintenance Works For Orkney

The Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has said the B9047 Road in Hoy is to temporarily close in places to allow repair and strengthening works to be undertaken.

The closures will occur during the day and will be in place for five days from Monday 29 September. The areas of road undergoing improvement works are a short section to the south of the bridge at Whaness, two locations in the vicinity of the bridge at Lyrawa, and an area on the south side of the bridge at Pegal.

Resurfacing of the carriageway, as well as strengthening will be carried out.

The closures mean that motorists travelling between the north of Hoy to Lyness will not be able to, between the hours of 9.30am and 4.30pm, but pedestrian traffic will be maintained.

Simon Butcher, OIC's Road Services Manager, explained: "It's important the local community on Hoy is aware of the coming closure, particularly those in the north of Hoy, so they can plan ahead, rearrange commitments such as medical appointments, shopping, and trips to the mainland – or travel early if needed.

"These are much needed works which will help make the road surface in these areas much more resilient for the community, and we're grateful in advance for their cooperation in helping us as quick as possible. It's our intention to complete the works within five days, however more time may be needed."
