A new £22m Asda supermarket has opened on Main Street in Barrhead.

The 25,000 square foot store includes a pizza counter, a bakery counter, a clothing section and a new born baby department.

Welcoming the opening of the store, Provost Alastair Carmichael said: "We have worked closely with Asda since the inception of their proposal to develop a new store in Barrhead. So we are delighted to see the plans come to fruition.

"An event held jointly with Asda to recruit staff was a huge success and helped find work for nearly 150 local people. Along with Asda, the new Barrhead Foundry, which we are building at a cost of £3.8million next door, is transforming the face of Main Street.

"Both developments have taken place alongside a host of other town centre improvements such as the new, free on-street parking spaces, street furniture and landscaping. I am certain Asda will be a huge success in a vibrant and thriving Barrhead town centre."
