SSE Unveils Plans For CCS Initiative

SSE has opened up Peterhead Power Station to the local community for a tour of the site.

Almost 100 people attended the event which provided a guided tour of the facility, as well as information regarding future plans for a carbon capture storage (CCS) project.

Following a presentation on the CCS plans at the Buchan Braes Hotel in Boddam, the tour groups were taken to the power station where they were joined by a guide and a CCS expert. The tour included the existing station infrastructure and highlighted the differences the CCS project would make.

SSE has said it is supporting Shell who will develop the world's first full-scale gas CCS project, which could see up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions captured from the power station and transported by pipeline offshore to Shell's Goldeneye reservoir for long-term storage.

In a statement, George Clements, SSE's CCS Development Manager, said: "The tours at Peterhead Power Station were a real success and a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our CCS proposals. It was really encouraging to see over 100 people of all ages visiting the station and asking us lots of questions about how it operates and what the CCS project would mean for the site."
