£1.2m Investment For North Lanarkshire

A total of £1.2m is to be invested in BioCity Scotland at Newhouse in North Lanarkshire, it has been confirmed.

The funding, which is being provided by the UK Government, is part of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal and will be used to establish MediCity Scotland at BioCity. At its Newhouse campus, MediCity Scotland will focus on cutting-edge innovation in healthcare and wellness. The work will complement an already-thriving life sciences hub on the site.

The local authority has said some 11,000 sq ft of building space will be made available for MediCity which will help allow for the creation and growth of more than 50 new healthcare businesses over the next five years. More than 350 jobs could also be created.

Commenting on the investment, Councillor Jim McCabe, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "This is a most welcome announcement by the Chancellor. I was hugely disappointed when BioCity was ignored by the Scottish Government in 2012 in its bid for enterprise status, which was a ridiculous decision.

"But this funding, part of the City Deal, will help to create jobs in a cutting edge industry. North Lanarkshire Council will continue to do all it can to support businesses across the board.

"City Deal has the potential to create thousands of jobs across North Lanarkshire and the Clyde Valley and I look forward to more announcements about specific projects which will benefit the people of North Lanarkshire as discussions continue."
