Safety Improvements For Ayrshire Coast Road

Transport Scotland has announced that a number of safety improvements have been introduced along the A78.

The move comes after concerns were made by local communities in Fairlie and Largs. The changes came into force from the beginning of the month.

In Fairlie, for example, a range of measures have been put in place to manage the speed of vehicles travelling through the village. New signage and road markings have been created to remind motorists that they are entering a restricted speed area. Some road markings have also been improved, while new vehicle activated signs will inform drivers when they are breaking the speed limit.

In Largs, Seamill and West Kilbride, new modern vehicle activated signs have also been erected.

It is understood that additional engineering measures will be in place in West Kilbride later this year when maintenance works are completed. This will again include improved lining and road markings.

A spokesperson for Transport Scotland said: "Road safety is extremely important and Transport Scotland is committed to doing all it can to improve safety in towns and villages across the country.

"We have worked with communities along the A78 in recent months to find the most appropriate ways of addressing concerns in each of these areas and we are confident that the measures being taken forward will be effective.

"Additional action is being taken forward in Fairlie, where we are investigating whether traffic signals can be activated by vehicles travelling at excessive speed. We hope to be able to update the local community on this by the end of August."
