The demolition was scheduled as part of the £86m flood alleviation scheme that is currently underway in the area. Before its closure a number of years ago, the bridge formed part of the Elgin to Lossiemouth railway line. The structure itself had created a 'pinch point' on the river which is said to have contributed to flooding in the South Lesmurdie area in recent years.

In order to remove the bridge, a crane was used to remove the deck and superstructure of the old bridge before the dismantling of the stonework could begin.
The demolition of the bridge will help to make sure that the river flow is not impeded in the future during times of high water.
