The Helix in Falkirk has been named as a finalist for 'Best Environmental Project' at this year's National Lottery Awards, it has been announced.

The awards, which are now in its 11th year, recognise lotto-funded projects throughout the UK which have made a difference to local communities.

The Helix has seen around 350 hectares of land between Falkirk and Grangemouth transformed into a vital environmental space for the community to enjoy. To date, the ambitious project has involved:

• Improving woodlands and 27km of new and improved walking and cycling paths, to connect 16 different communities to The Helix and wider Falkirk area.

• A new canal link and hub, forming a gateway to the Scottish Lowland Canals

• The creation of many full time job opportunities, multiple volunteer opportunities and a number of contracts and business opportunities for local trades and suppliers.

• The creation of a new park land, enhancing Falkirk's portfolio of recreational spaces, complete with play areas, catering facilities, and a purpose-built outdoor water sports lagoon.

• The Kelpies. The world's largest equine sculptures and public art works which guard the new canal hub.
