East Dunbartonshire Council has said it is to continue with its plans to close two schools in Kirkintilloch, and establish a new school in its place.
The move will see St. Agatha Primary School and St Flannan's Primary School close, with the pupils relocating to a new-build school on the existing St Flannan's site. It would open in time for the 2016/17 session.
Last month, the Council notified the Scottish Government of its decision for school provision, as required by law. As the Government has said no further information is now required, steps to begin the design of the new school can begin.
Council Leader Rhondda Geekie praised the decision, saying: "This new school will be of the highest modern standard and will better support the curriculum for learning.
"In East Dunbartonshire we have a proud record of excellence in education and delivering new schools across the area is a key part of our ambition to maintain and build on that record. Our young people deserve the best educational start in life that we can give them.
"Designing the new Kirkintilloch primary school to meet the needs of local people is a high priority for us and we look forward to working with local people on this exciting project."
