New affordable homes are to be constructed in Edinburgh as part of the National Housing Trust (NHT) initiative.

In a statement, the Council, working in partnership with the Scottish Government, developers and Scottish Futures Trust, has approved up to 516 new affordable homes through the NHT and these will be delivered with loans of £57.7m.

Previous NHT homes in the city include developments at Telford Road, Lochend and Granton Waterfront have now been completed, while one at Sailmaker Row is under construction.

NHT projects aim to provide mid market rent homes, and the properties are funded through Council borrowing which is repaid in full. As a result of this, there is no grant subsidy required.

Edinburgh's Housing Leader, Councillor Cammy Day, said: "The NHT scheme is an innovative way of providing quality and affordable housing, while supporting the building industry at the same time.

"A major part of the Coalition's commitment is to ensure that the city's residents are well housed and we will continue to invest in affordable homes, whether these are for social rent or the mid market."
