The Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has confirmed it has increased its financial commitment to the opening of a new train station at Reston.

The funding has now increased from £300,000 to £1.28m.

The initial amount was previously confirmed as part of its capital budget earlier this year, but the local authority has now set aside the additional funds for the scheme.

Councillor David Parker, Leader of SBC, said: "Because of the importance of rail accessibility to the future social and economic well-being of east Berwickshire, the Council has now decided to increase its proposed level of funding towards the scheme, which can only bode well for the station plans."

Councillor Gordon Edgar, SBC's Executive Member for Roads and Infrastructure, added: "It will improve the economy of the local area by making it more attractive to investors and tourism, it will provide access to a far wider jobs market and further education opportunities, and it will reduce the need to travel by road."
