Construction work has commenced at the Glasgow Fort Shopping Park as part of a major development project.
The £45m investment will see a Marks & Spencer store take up residence at the southern side of the park, while four further retail units and a restaurant will also be created.
Managed by Kier Construction, work on the 112,000 sq ft development is expected to take around 12 months to complete. Once opened, around 500 jobs are expected to be created. In addition to the above, the Shopping Park has also submitted a Planning Application Notice to build a 600-space multi-storey car park.
Phil Goodman, Centre Manager at Glasgow Fort Shopping Park, is quoted as saying: "We are delighted that this much-anticipated development has now started. Marks & Spencer is a fantastic name to add to our list of stores and we are confident it will be a major draw for people visiting the Park.
"We are committed to supporting the local community and economy and providing meaningful support through schemes such as our tie-up with Jobs and Business Glasgow for access to employment."
Bailie Jonathan Findlay, Chair of Jobs & Business Glasgow, added: "We are delighted that hundreds of jobs are on their way to Glasgow's East End with this new development. Glasgow Fort is a significant contributor to the local economy and this news of further employment opportunities is very welcome indeed."
While Councillor Maureen Burke commented: "It is fantastic news that work on this major development is underway. Glasgow Fort has been a great supporter of the local economy and community of the East End and we are delighted that this multi-million pound project represents a further significant commitment and investment in the area."
