An extension to the car park at Irvine Rail Station is to officially open later this month.

The car park will open on Monday 31 March.

ScotRail and North Ayrshire Council developed an additional 70 spaces, to increase the car park's capacity from 34 to 104. Some £650,000 of funding was allocated by the Scottish Government for the project.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: "There has been a serious lack of parking accommodation at Irvine station for many years. I am pleased that the new car park, provided by ourselves and ScotRail, will resolve the long-running problem faced by commuters.

"We are encouraging people to take the train and leave the car, and they need the proper facilities to do this. Travellers from Irvine now have three times the number of spaces available to them, thanks to funding from the Scottish Government."

Scottish Government Transport Minister, Keith Brown, added: "This extension will allow those using the service currently to enjoy a smoother journey from start to finish and will also help to attract even more people to use our railways. It will also be welcomed by line side neighbours by reducing street parking."
