The announcement comes after the Highland Council revealed the contract for the project had been awarded to Morrison Construction.
Extensive consultation work has been held regarding the Grade B-listed building, which still retains its original steel windows. As part of the upgrade works, new double-glazed windows will be installed to replicate the originals, while the electrical and mechanical installations will be upgraded and a general refurbishment of the classrooms will be carried out. Asbestos will also be removed from the property, and this will be undertaken during the Easter holidays, the local authority has said.

The Highland Council has set aside a total of £8.5m in its 10-year capital programme from 2018/19 onwards for a refurbishment of the entire school, but this pilot project will help to fully establish the extent of the works that will be required for a future project.
The original Inverness High School opened in 1937 and has been extended a number of times over the years.
