A programme of works to improve the verges of the A87 trunk road at Breakish, Skye, is to commence next week.

The initial phase will commence on Monday 3 March and has been given a scheduled completion date of the end of March.

Undertaken by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland, the work will involve the provision of crushed stone surface over sections of the existing narrow verges to improve safety for pedestrians walking through Breakish on the A87, while some existing ditches and drains will also be altered to allow a wider verge to be constructed.

Elsewhere, future phases of the work will include new signs and lining at the narrow bridges, the introduction of Vehicle Activated Signs to encourage motorists to drive slower, and a continuation of verge works along the full length to the Sleat junction.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland's spokesperson for the North West Unit, said: "We are delighted to have worked with the local community on these important works to improve visibility as well as pedestrian and road safety on the A87 at Breakish.

"We urge road users to pay attention to traffic management and temporary signage in place while these works are in progress, which are designed for the safety of both road users and the workforce."
