Work has commenced on the Annan Riverside Gateway project, Dumfries and Galloway Council has said.

The scheme has been designed to enhance the western approach of the town and will take approximately 10 weeks to complete.

The work will be carried out by the Council's DG First service and has been developed with the support of the Annan Regeneration Steering Group.

The riverside gateway is said to be a significant project in the Annan Masterplan and works will involve:

• Sandstone gateway - New sandstone gateways will be built on the approach to the bridge to welcome visitors to the Royal Burgh of Annan.

• Pavement widening - The pavement on the up-stream side of the bridge will be widened to make it safer for pedestrians.

• Lighting the bridge - Pedestal lighting on the bridge will be re-established, while new street lighting will also be installed on Bridge Street.

• Speed Limit - The 40 miles per hour speed limit will be introduced on the approach to the bridge. A 30mph limit on the bridge will remain.

• Floodlit Town Hall - The Town Hall spire will be floodlit.

• Clean up - Unnecessary and unsightly signs and damaged barriers around the bridge will be removed.

The project will cost around £110,000 and is being funded through the Council's Capital Programme.
