A planning application to extend Hyndford Quarry has been called in for review by Scottish Ministers.
The extension lies inside the buffer zone of the site and Falls of Clyde Inventory Designed Landscape; it is also adjacent to the New Lanark Conservation Area, which is part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve, a site of special scientific interest and special area of conservation.
Last year, South Lanarkshire Council approved plans by Cemex UK to extend the quarry, but campaigners have argued that a larger site would endanger the heritage site and conservation area.
A reporter will now be appointed to examine the proposal and make a recommendation to Ministers on whether planning consent should be granted.
