Work is to commence on the latest phase of flood alleviation measures in Smithton and Culloden, Inverness.

The programme of works will begin next week.

Pat Munro (Alness) Lt has been appointed as contractor to the £158,000 scheme and will implement designs put forward by JBA Consulting.

The works will take around 12 weeks to complete and will include measures on both the Culloden Burn West and Tower Burn.

The current phase of works is focusing on the installation of a coarse debris screen on both the Culloden Burn West, at Culloden Wood, and on the Tower Burn, at Rowan Grove. The screens will aid in preventing woody debris and large stones from being washed down stream to locations where culverts have been blocked in the past.

Leader of the City of Inverness Councillor Ian Brown said: "I am very pleased to see that these works are starting. We gave commitments at public meetings held in Culloden to ensure that flood alleviation schemes are put in place accordingly for the area. These current site works are key factors in making the community safer from potential flooding."

Detailed design of further phases of the Flood Alleviation Scheme for Smithton and Culloden is continuing.
