Refurb For Scapa Flow Museum

Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has said it has secured more than £25,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland towards a refurbishment of the Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum.

It is understood the funds will be used to support the conservation of artefacts from the museum's collection during the works.

Based at Lyness, Hoy, the facility is due to undergo its transformation in April. The project aims to restore the wartime naval buildings and enhance interpretation, update displays and conserve nationally and internationally important artefacts. There are also plans to create a new building which would house a new exhibition area, café, toilet facilities and information areas.

Throughout the duration of the works, the museum will close to the public.

Commenting on the news, the Council's Arts, Museums and Heritage Service Manager, Clare Gee said: "With the World War 1 commemorations now upon us, it's more important than ever that our collection of wartime artefacts is well-looked after. The Lyness museums buildings have been deteriorating for some time, and urgently need restoration and conservation.

"The restoration will ensure the future of the collections and support the local community in Hoy, which relies on the centre to attract visitors to the island.

"This project also enables us to positively commemorate the unique role of Scapa Flow in the world wars, leaving us a lasting legacy for future generations. The funding from Museums Galleries Scotland is vital to this and we are delighted to have secured it."
