Barr Construction has been appointed to deliver a new 25,000sq ft ASDA superstore in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.
The store is being constructed on a redundant site located behind the former health centre and will also include a petrol station, two electronic car charge points and parking for 250 cars.
Work has started on site with the demolition of the former health centre and library in order to make way for the new supermarket. Once the health centre is fully demolished, a temporary car park will be provided on the site in the new year.
Derek Simpson, Operations Manager for Barr Construction, said: "As a Paisley-based company, Barr Construction is proud to be involved in the regeneration of the local area.
"We are looking forward to starting works and playing an integral role in the redevelopment of the town centre.
"Barr has a successful track record of building retail superstores around the UK and, as our second project with Asda following the opening of the Dundee store earlier this year, we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the retailer."
Lisa Rooke, Asda's Property Communications Manager for Scotland, added: "We have been working closely with East Renfrewshire Council on co-ordinating the demolition of the redundant health centre and library to make way for the new store. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during these essential construction works.
"The proposals will see a significant investment in the town, regenerating a currently redundant site and delivering new jobs for local people.
"We are working towards opening the store in the late summer 2014, bringing more consumer choice, quality produce and Asda's famous low prices to the people of Barrhead."
The store is scheduled to open in late summer 2014 and is part of two major multi-million pound regeneration projects that will transform Barrhead main Street.
East Renfrewshire Council's Convener for Infrastructure and Sustainable Growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: "We are delighted to get work under way on our substantial investment programme in Barrhead, the Foundry.
"This will be a fantastic addition to Barrhead and will really transform the Main Street."
