Options To Save Meadowbank Unveiled

It is being reported that Councillors will meet next week to discuss the future of Meadowbank Stadium.

According to the BBC, three options are to be put before Edinburgh Council.

Each option would require multi-million pound loans in order to carry out a redevelopment of the site. The facilities, which hosted events at the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games, are in a state of disrepair. It is thought that as part of the transformation the outdoor athletics track will remain but will have significantly reduced spectator viewing; while the velodrome is set to be removed with cycling facilities being moved elsewhere.

With regards to the three proposals, each involve selling off land around the stadium for housing. Even though the sale would help fund the redevelopment, the cheapest option still means the Council needs to borrow more than £17m to invest in the facilities.

The multi-sports stadium is planned to open in 2017.
