The public is being invited to share their views on the proposed design for the Maybole Bypass.
The announcement comes as Transport Scotland published the draft Road Orders and Environmental Statement for the project.
The designs are set to go on display from 13 December at Maybole's Carrick Centre.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "This Scottish Government is committed to enhancing connections across Ayrshire and beyond, particularly to and from the Loch Ryan ports.
"People living in Maybole and drivers who travel on the A77 through the town will be well aware of the congestion that is a daily occurrence.
"Our plans for a Maybole Bypass will help separate local traffic from traffic travelling further afield, including to the ports. This will lead to improved road safety for local communities and road users alike and also provide better journey time reliability for motorists and businesses along the full length of the A77.
"I would encourage anyone with an interest to come along to the public exhibition next Friday to see our plans and take the opportunity to comment on them."
