Dundee City Council has said its Environment Department could be moving to new office space.

If plans are approved by Councillors, staff could be relocating to currently empty office space in City Square.

A tender report is due to go before the City Development Committee today (Monday), which recommends a £1m contract to alter the East Wing of City Square in order to house sections of the department.

Craig Melville, Convener of the Environment Committee said: "Refurbishing the offices in City Square is the most cost effective way of providing a long planned new headquarters from scratch, which as well as saving money will also be less disruptive for staff and service delivery.

"The completely separate review of recycling facilities in the city is still going on and I hope that we will be able to bring the results of that back to the policy and resources committee before the end of the year."

Bill Campbell, Depute Convener of the City Development Committee added: "In these difficult financial times when every penny counts it is vital that the council makes the best use of the buildings and space it already has.

"This move to the currently vacant office space does that by only spending part of the money we have already set aside in the capital plan for a new environment department headquarters."
