Smoo Cave, near Durness in Sutherland, has re-opened again for public access.

The site had temporarily closed to allow rock stability works to be carried out.

The work, which was undertaken by Rope Access Scotland Ltd and overseen by geotechnical experts from consultant URS Infrastructure & Environment UK Limited, included light rock scaling, netting and bolting. The project was essential for the maintenance of the site.

The cave and its immediate environment are owned by the Highland Council, and managed by its Planning and Development Service for the purpose of countryside recreation.

Each year, more than 43,000 people visit the site, while boat trips into the cave are provided by a local enthusiast.

Vice Chair of the Council's Planning, Environment and Development Committee and North, West and Central Sutherland Councillor George Farlow said: "I am delighted that Smoo Cave is again open for public access."

He added that the site makes "an important contribution" to the local economy through tourism.
