British Gas has said it will increase its prices for domestic customers from 23 November.

The move will see a duel-fuel bill surging by 9.2%.

The firm's parent company, Centrica, which trades under the name Scottish Gas in Scotland, said the increase includes an 8.4% rise in gas prices and a 10.4% increase in electricity prices.

The news comes after SSE recently announced it is to increase its domestic bills by 8.2% from 15 November.

It is understood almost eight million households will be affected by the latest price rise, with the company saying it "understands the frustration" of prices increasing at a much faster rate than incomes.

It added that the cost of buying energy on the global markets, delivering gas and electricity to customers' homes, and the government's "green" levies, were all factors in the decision to hike up prices.

Ian Peters, Managing Director of British Gas Residential Energy, said: "I know these are difficult times for many customers and totally understand the frustration that so many household costs keep on rising when incomes are not keeping pace.

"We haven't taken this decision lightly, but what is pushing up energy prices at the moment are costs that are not all directly under our control."
