Orkney Islands Council's Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is planning an event aimed at inspiring a return to traditional shop signage in the town of Stromness.

The event, which is planned for next month, will target business owners within the Stromness Conservation Area who could benefit from part-funding made available through the Stromness THI for replacement signage. In the meantime, the THI team is looking for examples of shop signage work from relevant businesses to showcase at the event.

Chair of the Council's Development and Regeneration Committee, Councillor James Stockan, said: "First impressions for our visitors are extremely important.

"It'd be great to see Stromness business owners in the conservation area come forward to take advantage of the assistance towards the new signage.

"Finishing off the business signs in Stromness would be the icing on the cake for the THI project."

The Stromness THI is a five-year project by Orkney Islands Council to enhance the historic centre of Stromness. It has been underway in the area since July 2009 and is scheduled to finish in June 2014.
