The play area in Dock Park has re-opened to the public following an extensive refurbishment programme.

The park was the recipient of a £2m regeneration programme which started in May this year.

The opening of the play area marks the first stage of the project's completion, with the remainder of the park due to open in the near future.

The new-look area will feature several areas which will have the capacity to hold live music events, as well as retaining some of the more traditional activity spaces such as the bowling green and refurbished play area.

Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council's Planning, Housing and Environment Committee, Colin Smyth, welcomed the re-opening of the park.

He said: "I've been pressing for the regeneration of the park now for some time, so it is great to see that so much progress has been made.

"I'm particularly delighted that the play area has re-opened in time for the school holidays and is being enjoyed by local families. I know the whole community are really looking forward to all the work being completed so we can see the Dock Park returning to its former glory."
