Kirriemuir's historic centre is to be restored as part of a million pound heritage scheme.

Angus Council and Historic Scotland are to jointly fund up to £1.1m to the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS). It aims to improve specific properties in the town's conservation area which are of architectural or historic interest and are currently either vacant or partially vacant. Small grants will also be available to property owners for shop front improvements and other external repairs to historic features such as rainwater goods, windows and stonework.

Angus Council Leader and CARS Steering Group member of the regeneration group, Councillor Iain Gaul, explained: "Angus Council has worked for number of years to bring this funding package together. Its success is a tribute to the vision and commitment of all those involved.

"Kirriemuir is unique in character. Following the success of the regeneration schemes in Brechin and Arbroath, this is another vital step in the ongoing regeneration of Angus towns. Restoring these buildings and bringing them back into sustainable use will breathe new life into the area in terms of jobs, tourism and economic regeneration."

The next CARS steering group meeting will take place on 29 October at 11am in the Lesser Hall, Kirriemuir.
