Cupar Town Centre Improvements To Begin

Fife Council has said improvement works to Cupar town centre will begin at the end of the month.

The project is expected to commence on Monday 30 September and should be completed by summer 2014.

The works include streetscape refurbishment along sections of the Crossgate, Bonnygate Street, Catherine Street, East Burnside, Station Road and East Bridge. Pavements will be uplifted and re-laid with key sections in high quality paving materials and kerbing, while a section of road realignment between St Catherine Street and East Bridge will be undertaken at the former ATS building, in addition to carriageway resurfacing.

Pedestrian crossing/traffic signals equipment will also be added and renewed, while the Monument (Mercat Cross) at Crossgate will be relocated and the entrance to Fluthers Car Park will be repositioned. A detailed plan of the works is available to view at the Local Office.

Works will start at the Crossgates on the west footpath, which will include relocating the Mercat Cross, and are expected to take five weeks to complete. Works will then commence on the east footpath.

For the duration of the works within the Crossgates, vehicles will only be permitted to exit on to the A91. This will have an impact on bus services and revised bus timetables will be advertised at affected bus stops and copies of the revised timetables will be available in the Local Office and Library prior to the works starting. After works are completed in the Crossgates, the project will progress on to the Bonnygate, St. Catherine Street, East Bridge, East Burnside, East Bridge and finally Station Road.

Fife Council's Executive Spokesperson for Transport and Environment, Councillor Pat Callaghan, said: "The residents and businesses of Cupar have been seeking an alternative to the signalised junctions through Cupar for a number of years and I am delighted that we are delivering a scheme which meets their aspirations.

"I am also pleased that we have the opportunity to undertake streetscape improvements as part of this project using high quality natural materials which will make the Town Centre attractive to both residents and visitors."
