Archeological investigations are due to commence this week ahead of construction work of the Access from the North (Third Don Crossing) in Aberdeen.

Headland-Archeology, which is based in Edinburgh, has been appointed to conduct the survey on behalf of Aberdeen City Council. The initial surveying started on Monday (2 September) before more invasive works, which include the use of mechanical plant to move earth, starts later this week. The project will involve the excavation of sample trenches to see if there is any evidence of archaeology under the existing soil, and will focus mainly on the north side of the river.


Aberdeen City Council has allocated £15.36m capital funding for the Third Don Crossing, which could be substantially completed and open to the public by autumn 2015.

The scheme will see the creation of the Third Don bridge and a new stretch of road linking it to the road network north of the Don, as well as the realignment and upgrading of roads to the south of the river.
