An ambitious restoration project at one of Scotland's largest open cast coal mines is to be announced, the BBC has reported.

The Glenmuckloch site sits between the Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire border, to the north of Kirkconnel.

It is thought the site will be landscaped, before it is then transformed into a renewable energy park.

The proposals have been viewed as a major step forward for the country's energy sector, but there are concerns surrounding the project after mining firm Aardvark (TMC) recently collapsed.

The firm was the main trading subsidiary of ATH Resources.

Earlier this week, it was reported that anyone buying the liquidated assets of the companies would not be obligated to assume responsibility for the restoration work or the cost that is attributed.

As a result, the ruling by the court could leave the site as it is.

The BBC has claimed a collaboration is to be unveiled which will involve Hargreaves, landowner the Duke of Buccleuch and Dumfries and Galloway Council.
