Plans to create a new grant body to share funds generated by wind farms in Dumfries and Galloway have been dropped, the BBC has reported.

The Council had previously agreed to split the money received from developers, with half of the funds going to communities directly affected by the turbines, while the rest would be lodged to support projects across the region.

The fund has since been put on hold after concerns were raised about a group to administer the monies. Members of the local authority's planning committee have now asked for other options.

Ian Carruthers, Chair of the Committee, said there was "little support" for the action group.

He added: "There will be a lot of debate over this, there is a lot of controversy - there are a lot of heated thoughts when it comes to this and a lot of emotions behind it.

"Hopefully within two or three months we will have this bottomed out and we will have something in place which is palatable to everybody across Dumfries and Galloway - if we can reach that point."
