Community Project Named Best New Building

Construction News Image
An innovative community arts project, constructed using BSW Timber's easi-timber™ is one of 12 new buildings to be named the best in Scotland.

The Ghost of Water Row, which is designed to recall Govan's weaving trade, won the accolade as part of The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) awards which recognise architectural achievement in Scotland.

For one night only last November, the project recreated the ghostly replicas of the old Ferry Inn and Ticket Office which once stood on the slipway at Govan's Water Row, alongside the River Clyde.

Timber frames were created following the exact dimensions of the original buildings before being covered in white tarpaulin and lit up in the evening, creating ghostly structures apparently 'haunting' the historic riverside setting.

Inspired by local architects Edo Architecture, the project was intended made a highly visible link to the history of the area – as well as making a bold public statement promoting locally sourced Scottish material and labour.

BSW donated 220 metres of FSC certified easi-timber™ and the company was delighted to be involved in such an innovative arts project.

Speaking at the time, Eve Johnson, BSW's marketing manager said: "This is a fantastic project which literally lights up our easi-timber™ range. The overall effect is spectacular, and will act as a fitting beacon heralding future redevelopment and the regeneration of the wider Govan area."

The historic buildings of Water Row stood from the mid-1700s until the development of the site by industrial ship builders Harland and Wolff in the early 20th Century.
