The BBC has said a £3m proposal to construct an abattoir on the outskirts of Dalbeattie has been approved.

The state-of-the-art facility is to be constructed at a former concrete works site, adjacent to Craignair Quarry.

Dumfries and Galloway Food Co-operative (DGFC) have said they hope to open the facility in 2014.

When completed, the meat processing plant will employ seven people and will provide 'significant economic benefits', according to DGFC.

Concerns had been raised over the proposed building regarding noise, smell and pollution issues, however planning officials approved the plans. They are, however, subject to strict conditions.

Last year, the Scottish Government set aside a £1.3m grant for the plans.
