An announcement regarding funding on a new £200m general hospital in Dumfries is "imminent", according to the BBC.

It is understood the Scottish Government has been considering an outline business case for the proposed development.

If financial backing for the project is secured, NHS Dumfries and Galloway hopes to select a contractor by autumn 2014, with constructing beginning as early as spring 2015.

Plans for the hospital have already been approved in principle by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The site, which is farmland located off the Garroch roundabout near the western end of the Dumfries bypass, has been suggested for the development. The hospital will be a 350-bed facility and will include 104 staff residencies, a helipad and almost 1,000 car parking spaces.

The new hospital is understood to replace the existing Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary once constructed and opened.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway is said to be to confirm the outcome of the government's decision within the next few days.
