Work is to begin on restoring Dock Park in Dumfries, the BBC has said.

The £2m project is being financed through a combination of council support and the Heritage Lottery Fund and will see the park and its facilities upgraded.

At the height of its popularity, the park offered a range of leisure and sport facilities for families, including tennis courts, putting greens and a paddling pool. Over time, however, the condition of the park deteriorated.

It is thought the new investment will rejuvenate the park and return it to its former prime.

The work will see a number of the park's key features, such as the bandstand and a monument in memory of local victims of the Titanic restored, while the children's play area will also be replaced. Improvements will also be carried out to the bowling pavilion, new gateways at the northern and southern entrances will be erected, while extensive landscaping will be undertaken and the existing car park upgraded.

Three surveillance cameras will protect the new and improved facilities as part of the town's wider CCTV network.
