Preparations are underway to demolish Dundee's Harris Academy.

The current building is being destroyed to make way for a new £31m replacement, and the City Council has said demolition work could be underway as early as September.

An updated report on the project was published, which also confirmed that the costs of the work to the council would not exceed the previously reported £12m.

The final approval of planning permission was granted for the site on Monday, and the council has said it plans to hand over the Perth Road site to the contractors in early August.

Preparation work is to be carried out to remove asbestos before the building can be brought down and rebuilt.

Education Convener Councillor Stewart Hunter said: "These are exciting times for everyone connected with Harris Academy.

"While the traditions of Harris still remain integral to its ethos, the school will be leading the way for a new type of building that is fit for the educational challenges of the years ahead.

"We have been working closely with the Scottish Government to ensure that this major investment is in place."
