Scottish Water Confirm £250m Flood Plan

Construction News Image
A £250m project, which will alleviate flooding in Giffnock, is to be undertaken by Scottish Water.

The flood alleviation project will be carried out at the junction of Robslee Road and Orchard Park Avenue.

Flooding has been a problem in the area for a number of years and the source of the problem is a Scottish Water main sewer that is unable to cope with prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.

East Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Water have been working together to determine the best solution to alleviate the flooding and a number of works have already been carried out by the Council to disconnect road drainage from the sewer to improve its capacity. This included a new road drainage system being installed in Ravenscliffe Drive.

The main work required, however, is to be carried out by Scottish Water in the form of improving sewer capacity downstream to allow the sewers in the Robslee area to discharge freely.

As a result, Scottish Water has said it is committed to alleviating the flooding in the area and has unveiled a £250m programme of work.

The improvements will be completed over the next five years in the Greater Glasgow areas waste water network.

Outline designs are thought to be completed by August which will then allow the tender process to begin. A contractor should be in place by May 2014, with work beginning on site in the late summer. Part of this work will include a large storage and conveyance sewer tunnel to alleviate flooding at Robslee Drive and Treeburn Avenue in Giffnock.

Environment Convener Councillor Vincent Waters said: "I am delighted to hear this is to go ahead and I am sure the residents of Orchard Park Avenue and Robslee Road will as well. This has been a problem area for many years especially after prolonged periods of heavy rainfall. I am glad the good working relationship between the council and Scottish Water has resulted in a solution to solve this problem."
