South Ayrshire Council has approved funding for work to be carried out at two primary schools in the area.
The funding will see Barrhill Primary School upgraded and extended, while Doonfoot Primary School will receive a new extension.
The decision is part of the Council's approved Asset Management Plan and School Estate management Plan which sets out the investment priorities for schools over the next 15 years.
Barrhill and Doonfoot have been identified as priority projects within the first five-year programme. Funding from the £2m 2014/15 schools refurbishment budget will be used to carry out the improvements; with £1.1m set aside for the work at Barrhill Primary School and £469k for the extension at Doonfoot Primary School.
The designs for Barrhill Primary School are complete with the necessary planning consent and building warrants are in place, with the project ready to go to tender.
The proposal is for construction work to begin in August 2013, with an anticipated completion date of June 2014. The school will be transferred to the community hall during the building work.
Speaking about the investments, Councillor Robin Reid, Resources and Performance Portfolio Holder, said: "This is fantastic news for the communities of Barrhill and Doonfoot. Ensuring that our children have accommodation that is fit to educate them in the 21st century is crucial for their development."
