Aberdeenshire Council has confirmed a former town centre supermarket in Ellon is to be demolished.

The site will then see a new store built in its place.

Aldi Stores Ltd was granted full planning permission to demolish the former Haldanes store and build a new supermarket at the riverside site, located of Ythan Terrace.

The plans would see the store built at the opposite end of the site from the existing building.

Speaking before the committee, an Aldi representative said, should the application be approved, the organisation was committed to bringing forward the development in 2014.

The spokesman added the proposed drawing had received positive feedback when referred to the Design Review Panel.

Although describing the design of the new building as "corporate", committee members agreed the scheme would be an improvement on the current layout of the site.

It also welcomed that the new facility would be situated further away from the Ellon bridge than the existing building.
