Stirling Council has unveiled its road maintenance programme for 2013-14.

The decision was approved following a meeting of Stirling Council's Environment and Housing Committee last week.

For 2013-14, a budget of £6.4m has been allocated to continue improving the condition of 1011km or roadways and 790km of paths and pavements.

Environment Convener Councillor Danny Gibson said: "We know how important it is to local people that our area's roads are as well managed and maintained as possible. Resurfacing roads, paths and pavements across the whole Stirling area is a key priority for the Council, and we are committed to investing in the condition of our roads."

The Committee heard that the combination of recent extreme winters, flooding and wet summers has taken its toll on the roads, with some of the damage only now becoming apparent, with a substantial increase in potholes and other defects being reported.

An estimated 88% of the total 2013-14 revenue budget for roads maintenance is to be allocated to such repairs.

The national Road Condition Index shows Stirling is currently placed 22 out of 32 councils.
