A £3.8m water main upgrade has been completed in Renfrewshire.

The project, which began in September 2011, saw improvements and upgrades made to more than 100 miles of distribution mains.

A total of 58,200 people in areas of Renfrewshire were affected by discoloured water due to naturally-occurring manganese in parts of the local network served by the Muirdykes Water Treatment Works (WTW). The affected areas included Johnstone, Linwood, the south of Paisley, Kilbarchan and Craigend.

Jim Hassan, Scottish Water’s Water Operations Manager, said: "We are delighted to have completed this important work on the distribution mains in these areas. The discoloured water in parts of the Muirdykes WTW supply zone was something we took very seriously and tackling it was one of our priorities.

"This major investment in upgrading the pipes has substantially reduced the risk of manganese pick-up from the mains and we know that our customers will be delighted with the improvements in their water quality."

Scottish Water is planning further investment to tackle manganese in the area, including the upgrading the Muirdykes WTW. Details of the investment are due to be revealed in due course.
