Royal Mile Consultation To Be Held

Construction News Image
The future of Edinburgh's Royal Mile is to be consulted.

The consultation exercise has been launched by the city council, the BBC has reported.

Royal Mile is Edinburgh's most famous street and under a 'Royal Mile Action Plan', proposals have been drawn up to determine its future.

Issues suggested for consideration by the Council include traffic flows and the mix of retail outlets.

Many of those operating businesses in the street have said they are busier than ever, but some visitors have said they were 'let down' by their overall experience of the area.

The Council has therefore organised a number of workshops to take place in the area and comments about the Royal Mile can also be submitted by email.

Planning Convener for the city, Councillor Ian Perry, said: "These workshops are a collaborative effort. Shaping the future of the Royal Mile means listening to the people who know it best - local residents, businesses and community groups - and having a constructive discussion about the best way forward.

"We need to strike the balance between ensuring that the Royal Mile remains one of the primary destinations for visitors coming to Scotland, while meeting the needs of the many residents and businesses who use it every day.

"If we get that right, we can ensure this ongoing project maintains the long-term future of the street."

Edinburgh City Council has said the consultation will run until 17 May.
