A total of £40k has been awarded to Rozelle House and the Maclaurin Art Gallery from the Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS).
The MGS is the strategic development body for museums and galleries in Scotland and the grant is part of a national funding package of £500k.
The award will now be used to help deliver the planned development of Rozelle, to maximise the use of the museum building and provide a space for cultural activities.
In addition to the construction work, the money will also be used to increase the range of exhibitions, activities and collections available at the museum.
Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "Scotland's museums and galleries are tremendously important, telling the story of our nation and attracting visitors from around the world. That is why, in line with the Scottish Government's strategy to support economic recovery and create more jobs, I am increasing capital investment in our museums and galleries.
"My decision to allocate an additional £100,000 to the MGS Capital Fund this year means we will be able to do more to preserve and enhance these important collections, boosting the Scottish economy and bringing social and community benefits across Scotland."
