Work has begun on a new community pitch and primary school at Toll Park in Burntisland.

Fife Council have said diggers are now preparing the ground for work in order to minimise disruption for users of the recreation park.

The new primary school for Burntisland is part of Fife Council's Building Fife's Future programme.

The current project at Toll Park provides a replacement school for the children of Burntisland who will be receiving a state-of-the-art facility.

Councillor Bryan Poole, Spokesperson for Education, Children, Families and Young People, said: "The high standard of learning and teaching at Burntisland Primary School has never been in question but the facilities at the school were sorely lacking, with children being taught in a collection of Victorian buildings, extensions from the fifties and huts in the playground.

"This new school will provide the staff and children with an excellent facility where they can take full advantage of modern, purpose built classrooms, giving them the flexibility they need for a modern education."

Under the Building Fife's Future programme, Dunfermline High School and Carnegie Primary School in Dunfermline have also opened, while a new Auchmuty High School, in Glenrothes, set to open after the summer break. New school buildings are also planned for Levenmouth, Madras College, in St Andrews and Kirkcaldy East.
