More than £3million of developer contributions towards affordable housing in Aberdeen has been secured by the city council, with a further £1million to be negotiated for the next financial year.

The Aberdeen Local Development Plan requires housing developers to provide a percentage of affordable housing in their developments, but on occasion they will instead be required to make a financial contribution towards affordable housing elsewhere.

A report to be considered by the Development Management Committee next week reveals that to date, Aberdeen City Council has received £2,566,888 of developer contributions and £145,243 in interest. Agreements are in place to provide an income of £517,500 in 2013/14 and agreements to provide a further £1million are being negotiated.

Of the money received, £1,777,081 has been paid out to registered social landlords (RSLs) and a further £100,510 committed to RSLs. These grants have so far contributed to the provision of: seven special needs flats; 39 very sheltered flats; 43 affordable rented flats; four wheelchair accessible houses; and 28 mid-market rented flats.

Decisions on which affordable housing developments should be funded are made by the Housing and Environment Committee.
