The original site of Kilmarnock Academy is set to continue to play an important part in the community as the turf was cut at the location of the new Kilmarnock Resource Centre.

The new facility will provide opportunities for integration, social contact and learning for members of the community who have physical or learning disabilities. Using the expertise and experience built up from projects like the Rosebank Centre in Kilmarnock, the centre will be a unique facility that will form an impressive part of the Kilmarnock townscape.

On the same site where Sir Alexander Fleming and Lord John Boyd Orr were educated, Woodstock School will also be refurbished to accommodate Flowerbank Nursery.

Councillor Tom Cook, Depute Leader of the Council performed the official turf cutting. He said: "This is just one of a series of major capital projects which are coming to fruition now and which marks the Council’s investment in its communities. I am greatly looking forward to seeing the project take shape and I am grateful to the project team and all who have contributed to the work that has allowed us to reach this important stage."

The centre is due for completion at the end of 2013.
