Dundee City Council has welcomed a decision to help build more affordable rented housing in the city.

A budget of £1.5m has been set aside to help with the new builds.

The news by the Scottish Government brings the total amount of funds available up to 2015, to £7.7m.

The extra funding will enable the council to continue the regeneration of priority areas in the city and to provide new high quality energy efficient homes for people on waiting lists.

Working alongside the Registered Social Landlords, a majority of the money will be allocated to Angus Housing Association for the redevelopment of Ormiston Crescent and to HOME Scotland to help continue the third-phase regeneration of Mill o'Mains and Whitfield Loan.

On top of the 130 homes already planned, the additional allocation will enable a further 30 houses to be built.

Jimmy Black, convener of Dundee City Council's housing committee, said: "The city needs more homes and more jobs, and this new money from the Scottish Government is very welcome.

"Thirty families will have brand new, warm, energy efficient homes, and that will make a huge difference to their lives."
