The £25m plus project to create a new Newbattle Community High School has taken a major step forward with the location being confirmed as a site opposite the current school.
Councillors have already gave the Mayfield Complex the go ahead.
The complex is already owned by the council and the choice means the new school and community facilities could be completed as much as two years earlier than other options.
The Scottish Government has told the council it expects to see the new school and other facilities built as quickly as possible as part of its funding conditions, with work to start within 12 to 18 months.
The Scottish Government is contributing two thirds of the cost, around £18m, with the council at least one third, with the council's expected investment rising depending on the final decisions around the level of community facility provision at the new campus.
