Historic Scotland Releases £600,000 Grants

Six sites across Scotland are to receive Historic Scotland Building Repair Grants worth almost £600,000.

£587,049 is being made available through the grants scheme, which will help property owners meet the cost of repairs using traditional materials and specialist craftsman.

John O’Groat’s Mill is to receive £221,316. Originally built as a threshing mill in 1750, the building was rebuilt in 1901 as a corn mill.

Crichton Memorial Church in Dumfries will receive £175,528. The church is a late 19th century cathedral style church, designed as part of the Crichton Lunatic Asylum.

The Theatre Royal in Dumfries has been granted £24,624. The theatre is the oldest still in use in Scotland and is an extremely rare survival of an 18th century theatre.

It was designed by local architect Thomas Boyd in 1790 and apparently modelled on the Theatre Royal in Bristol.

St Fillan’s Mill in Killin, Stirling is to receive £38,703. It is a 19th century mill built in a romantic decorative style on the site of a succession of grain mills which date back to ancient times.

Alexandra Suspension Bridge in Tain will receive £50,000. This decorative, wire-rope suspension bridge is the work of Rose Street Foundry Inverness in 1902.

Roseburn House in Edinburgh has been allocated £76,878. It is an important example of a multi-period mansion house with significant early fabric in its 16th century tower.

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs said: "It is essential that we maintain our historic Scottish buildings which form such a key part of our streetscape and also attract tourists from around the world.

"We have such a variety of fascinating buildings which all contribute to our heritage and we need to ensure that we preserve them for future generations to enjoy and also learn about their past."
