Alex Salmond has been meeting with leader of the Highland Council, Councillor Drew Henry, to discuss key development and infrastructure issues affecting the Highlands.

Councillor Hendry met the First Minister in Inverness, where he gave Mr Salmond an update on the Council’s priorities and the progress of projects and initiatives throughout the Council area.

Mr Hendry told the First Minister the Highland Council had a number of "shovel ready" projects which could be taken forward with government assistance.

He highlighted to Mr Salmond the damage caused to 24 Highland piers and harbours during the storms of 14/15 December last year.

The estimated bill for repair is £2.55m.

The Council leader also emphasised to the First minister the need to find a solution on the A 890 Stromeferry Bypass, between Lochcarron and Kyle, which was closed for two days from Christmas Day due to the latest rockfall.

He said: "The First Minister is no stranger to our area and it was good to again have the opportunity to brief him on the key Highland issues. Our wide-ranging discussion included the many opportunities we have to develop tourism in the Highlands and how best to promote the forthcoming European Tour Scottish Golf Open at Castle Stuart."
